as i try to keep up with everything else for the next six months! it's been a very busy first month, and im glad that i get to work on lots of stuff and managed to finish some (i am yet to start on other projects that needs to be done asap - i'll get to that as soon as i wake up later).

i've been working on 4 collections of works for the past weeks now.

i'm doing all at the same time, trying to meet deadlines, months before they need all the artworks, until i figured out it's just impossible for me.

so i focused on one and finally (finally!) i managed to finish just in time for this year's Art In The Park.

it was a project involving selected members of Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan doing an illustration for notecards for Filipinas Heritage Library, that gave way to having an actual exhibit featuring the exploration of the mind while and/or after indulging on a good read.

with this illustration, i want to involve my nephews and niece. and we used to read a lot during bed times but i never really read the text - i let them make stories.

20 Things you may or may not know about INK.

Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (Ang INK) was founded on June 7, 1991 during a Children's Book Illustration Workshop sponsored by the Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY) and the Goethe-Institut Manila. The workshop was conducted by visiting German illustrator Reinhard Michl.

During its first year, Ang INK grew from 21 workshop participants to more than 70 members. Ang INK members are also known as "INKies."

It was Robert Alejandro's idea to call Ang INK, "INK." It was Bernie Solina's idea that the "I" should stand for "Ilustrador." As a joke, "INK" initially stood for "Inihaw na Kambing" ("broiled goat").

Mel Silvestre was chosen as Ang INK's very first president because he was literally someone that everyone could "look up to." He was succeeded as president by Joanne de Leon.

Ang INK has received several awards as a group, including a Pearl Anniversary Reading Advocacy Award from the Reading Association of the Philippines in 2000, and a Citation from the Philippine Board on Books for Young People in 2001.

The themes of Ang INK's annual exhibits center on Filipino life and culture as may be seen and appreciated by children. These themes include a child's daily life, dreams, games and stories; Philippine tourism, history, folktales, mythology and wildlife; the art of Larry Alcala and the stories of Lola Basyang and Rene Villanueva.

Many Ang INK members are recipients of awards such as the Philippine Board on Books for Young People Illustratror's Prize, Palanca Awards, Gintong Aklat Awards and National Children's Book Awards.

Inkie Ferdinand Doctolero won second place at the Noma Concours for Picture Book Illustrations, a prestigious international competition. Other INKies who have been honoured at the Noma Concours include Panch Alcaraz, Serge Bumatay III, Beth P. Doctolero and Jomike Tejido.

It's been 12 years since Ang INK last held an exhibit at Ayala Museum: "INKuwento," its 7th annual exhibit was held in 1999, and "Buhay Bata," its 4th annual exhibit, was held in 1995.

Children’s books in the early 90’s such as the Aklat Batibot series, were printed with half of its pages in black and white and the other half in color because of the prohibitive costs of full-color printing. Primarily, it was our 20th birthday and Ayala Museum is generous enough to host a retrospective and our annual exhibit in their lobby for 3 months!

one of my books was included in the retrospective - Ang Alamat ng Gagamba (The Legend of the Spider) written by Segundo D. Matias, Jr., published by Lampara Books.

In the old days, there was a talented cloth weaver. She did nothing else but weave and weave. She wove the clothes of her townmates, she also wove the garments of the majestic queen, and she wove still the dress of a generous nymph.
But as she became famous as a cloth weaver, she also became haughty and arrogant.
Find out in this modern legend how the spider came about and the importance of humility in times of success and bounty.

and here's my work for the annual exhibit, shown simultaneously with the retrospective featuring illustrations of untold narratives. notice the different style i put into each work. i am hopeful that someday (at the soonest future), local book industry will publish children's books featuring illustrations such as these - unbound by the 'cutesy' culture, more abstract, unadulterated.

i realized a lot of things.

from the time i woke up at around 2am (which i thought was 4am or so), i began to sketch then had a morning walk with my cousin, who was just outside when i walked my dog and bought a half pack of marlboro lights and an instant coffee.

we talked about a lot of things: ideas, perspectives, personal and family life... and one thing i realized was, even though we are of the same age and been brought up within the same community, we are too different. we have different status in life but somehow, we are somewhat experiencing almost the same stuff. and i was a bit saddened - that no matter how he tried, he will never really grasp what i understand.

then he told me he wanted to draw but never really had a chance to practice. so we drew something on my personal sketch notebook. in a spread, at least we were the same - two figures, posing with our backs, drawn by each other. he enjoyed this as he was laughing and seemed like he's really having fun drawing. somehow i felt relieved.

then his wife came from a music gig and i was left alone so i went on sketching.

then everyone woke up. it was around 5:30. the day is starting. we all have to go on. so i went back to my working area (for 2 days now) replying to emails and trying my best to come up with an exhibit proposal.

i wish i could write well, at least whenever i should.

the sun is up. the water's boiling. i already have 2 cups of coffee since i woke up. i have to give my dog a bath.

what i've been doing lately:

1. a book project for vibal foundation. written by doc luis gatmaitan, watch out for it at this year's Manila International Book Fair guys!

2. i've been doing some ink drawings lately, for experimenting.

3. an illustration about reading and dreaming for a not card and exhibit (i think).

4. i've started keeping a journal where i do some drawings, sketches, quick brush paintings , etc. i wish to continue this as far as i can and thankfully, i get to update this often.

5. i am currently working with bunch of pencil sketches as studies for my next book project.hehe it gonna be fun!

6. i will paint more for 1 commission piece, and for 2 more exhibits (for now). im planning to organize 2 small exhibits by the last quarter. excited!

the rain doesn't stop and we experienced a 5.9 earthquake last night. we didn't notice any shaking as i was on a painting for a note card project. i already finished and went to the showers, thinking i should paint more. but then the lights went off, a black out, so i went out with a flash light (still raining), had gsm blue and went sleeping.

we're all excited on how this will look like a year after when this 2 hectare is transformed into a getaway residence for our family and friends. it does need a lot of cleaning but my dad thinks it'll be done in two months (i hope! can't wait to camp there soon!)

it looks promising with fruit-bearing trees and a cool river we can swim at. it has fishes and turtles too, although one of the agent had several gun shots preying on a turtle for their meet (yeah, it's sad. my brother-in-law and nicky even went to his spot to stop him from shooting at the turtles but he did kill one already as we get there. they saw other big turtles but due to failing eye sight, i just saw a small one, gasping for air on the surface.)

anyway our family and two immediate friends (i figured we have lots of kaladkarin friends around but janice and nicky were the most available at that time.haha) had a picnic at the place. we started hitting the road at almost 9am, we also used nicky's car since all of us wouldn't fit in our crv. we arrived at quezon around 10-11pm.

i consider myself lucky to have collaborate with the Jason Moss as part of a three-day workshop for our group, Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan. it was fun and of course, we learned a lot: from basic to advance illustration, creating data bank, dealing with creative block, collaborative work, focus, "closing the work", etc. plus we get to visit his own studio too, which is awesome!

two weeks ago, one of the producers of Batibot asked me if i can make illustrations that they will animate for one of their segments, Kwentong Batibot. and i (excitedly) said yes! i remember many years before when eros, my younger brother, and i will watch Batibot in the morning, still in our pajamas, and drinking milk. and now, i get to contribute for the show! im excited to see how will they look like when they move!hehe

the story is "Si Kabunian at Ang Mga Tao" where the god of Bontoc rewarded the hardworking people with a magical tree that bears almost all of man's necessity, the people rejoiced and since they don't have to work for food anymore, they become fat and lazy, and forgot to take care of the surroundings. Kabunian, got angry when he looked down the filthy earth and saw the people slacking under the tree. realizing that the magic tree brought no good to man, he make the tree disappear.

btw, i am an active member of Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan, a group of children's book illustrators here in the Philippines. and right now, i am our featured inkie member for the week in the org's official blog, Thinkie Tank!

i dont usually show my children's illusts compared to my paintings, i guess it's because before, i only do illustrations to make money for my art. eventually i learned a lot and have come to love it, then realized i can do both at the same time and being a children's book illustrator gave me a great deal of responsibility for the younger Filipinos. and with that, i found one of my purpose!

so, if you have extra money, buy local children's book for your kids, nephews and neices, young brothers and sisters, and even cousins! it's a whole lot of fun..and colors!hehe support local talents!

I'll be joining this year's Looking For Juan Outdoor Banner Project. And since it is Jose Rizal's 150th year, the project will tackle the relevance of our National Hero with today.

My work is about what i think is one of the most significant impact of Rizal's life, his ideas.

The philosophy of our nation is defined by the intricate and composite interralationship of the life histories and experiences of every individual in the Philippines. I believe that the state of our country reflects a not so pleasant physicality. Now, our generation has this responsibility to carry on the ideals and works of Rizal for the betterment of the future.

i went home that night from the city, confused and disappointed. i feel so down that i walked from the bus terminal to our subdivision, a good 7 minute tricycle + jeepney ride. i was texting a friend, the whole time i'm walking, and been thinking in my head over and over the details of what happened.

so when i got home i had a small bottle of wine and ate 3 pcs of happy-milky-candy (yema hehe) but it didn't make me feel any better. ~~although i think it kinda did haha, but my head can't stop thinking of what happened that night, so i guess it didn't quite do the trick~~.

anyway, i got red (as usual) and hungry and still not sleepy.i decided to have a shower and went on to look somewhere to eat around 4am, alone. in times like these, i tend to wander alone, walking. it gives me a sense of clarity. so when i feel really really really reslly bad, i do walk to wherever. it is, somehow, therapeutic.

i ended up eating near the bus terminal i went off hours before.

Curated by Zeus Bascon, We Are Not Aimless gathered 27 names that were already established in the creative industries, a crew composed of graphic designers, art directors, comic book artists, and children’s book illustrators to contribute visual distillations of their ideas on illustration as artistic practice.

“One of the biggest challenges I faced as a curator was defending the need for this type of show,” says Bascon, a board member of Ilustrador ng Kabataan who ventured into soft sculpture for this exhibition, “but I couldn’t even come up with a concrete definition of illustration”. Pieces such as Mica Cabildo’s crocheted works, and toys by Isabel Roxas and Abi Goy, only add to the ambiguity of defining both the products and practice of illustration. By presenting a collection that was about as organized a Surrealist parlor game, Bascon and co. made it difficult for the exhibition to guide the viewer towards a singular narrative that would redefine illustration, which was already described in the notes as an “often misunderstood art form”, and assert its place in the canon of Contemporary Art. In this chaos, one is more likely to find a defense of aimlessness, rather than a contradiction to it.

According to Bascon, “aimlessness”, in the case of the illustrator, is to lack any unique motivation besides “slavishly” following the written word. This is based on the experiences of its practitioners, wherein the fruits of their labor serve to supplement texts, whether these are stories or advertising copy or magazine features; and that as a practice, it is mere preparation for higher art forms. This places the illustrator in the ambiguous space between artist and artisan, maintaining that archaic distinction between high and low culture, wherein illustration occupies a realm unworthy of the gallery or museum. Illustration is too light and too popular. Peter De Vries once said that “Everyone hates me because I’m so universally liked,” as if popularity and mainstream viability were threats to artistic integrity, and indicated a lack of that elusive critical component that which has the power to both elevate and alienate, making Art worthy of the sterile situation offered by the gallery.

But in this day and age, what is the gallery but another space for mass media?
To quote from an interview with AA Bronson of Canadian art collective General Idea of “[The] gallery’s relationship to art [is] very much like the garage’s relationship to the car: we use the gallery to tinker with and repair the work, but the real function of our art is out on the road, in a way — it’s within the current of the culture.” This analogy implicates the gallery as the fuse, whereas the public arena in which illustration operates—whether it’s the magazine, the street, or the billboard— is the current. Thus an exhibit like We Are Not Aimless signifies a reversal or bubbling-up, similar to the stir caused by Takashi Murakami with the when he brought Superflat and Poku (Pop + Otaku) culture to galleries and began commanding gallery prices for what could only be recognized by Western sensibilities as “low culture”. Yet, according to Murakami, this dichotomy of high and low within the art scheme is foreign to Japan—a culture that bears an undeniable influence on the overall aesthetic of We Are Not Aimless.

If there is one aspect in which this exhibit succeeds, it is by breaking the institutional parameters of art exhibition and shedding light on the manner in which we currently consume art—as a flattened object, which is primarily what illustration is. The stories read to us when we were children provided our earliest encounters with illustration: as 2-dimensional illuminations of existing narratives, texts we couldn’t give two shits about because what mattered were the pretty pictures. Today, our visual language is informed by the motions of scrolling down pages arrived at with a few clicks and consumed in the absence of the context provided by proximity. This could explain why We Are Not Aimless unintentionally bears an aesthetic similar to a teenager’s tumblr feed, wherein illustrations share space with all manners of creative endeavor regardless of how clearly the boundaries were defined, regardless of the skill and technique employed in the creation of each piece, and regardless of distinctions between high and low. This made Manila Contemporary, a space for exhibitions which occupy that narrow boundary between the popular and the avant-garde, an excellent choice to stage this exhibition.

What this could signify is a triumphant return to the sensibilities of the avant-garde, culminating in a collection that takes advantage of the absence of the conditions that honed the expertise of these artists; conditions like deadlines and stifling agency work, which most of the artists, including Sta. Maria, Manix Abrera, and Dan Matutina, are no doubt familiar with. Many of the exhibit’s participants were Fine Arts or Communications graduates who cut their teeth in the fast-paced advertising industry—a business dependent on the capitalist and consumerist conditions—and their contributions to We Are Not Aimless would eventually provide commentary on this business.

But the key word here is “creation”. Despite its attempts to break boundaries through form and content, what the exhibit failed to highlight was the motivation shared by its participants, which was to create for the sake of creating. In the words of John Berger, to draw is a form of meditation; a process that involves adding line to line in the creation of a cohesive whole—a process that perfectly distills the emotions tapped into when looking at We Are Not Aimless as a whole. “I know it’s called ‘We Are Not Aimless,’ but ironically, I started these pieces without an aim,” admits Eeshaun, a self-taught designer who has done work for both private and public institutions in his home, Singapore. “I just start with one color and one form until the whole space is filled and I need to stop,” implying that a possible aim of drawing is to stop drawing.

While the act of illustration may meander and dawdle towards completion, its purpose and responsibility towards creation remains clear. And through Berger’s definition of adding line to line, point to point, We Are Not Aimless somehow manages to hit the spot.

my trip to Macau was really a project for the Macau Government Tourism Office.

they sponsored the whole trip: from the air fare, the elegant hotel, amazing food, tickets to the House of Dancing Water in the City of Dreams (it's awesome!) and Cirque de Soleil: ZAIA at The Venetian! and for me it was more of an experience than work.

along with artists Robert Alejandro, Jomike Tejido, Ferdinand Doctolero; as well as photographers Rommel Bundalian and Budee Mendoza of 360 Virtual Reality Tours, is an exhibit at the Mall of Asia featuring our view of Macau, on March 25-27.

We Are Not Aimless presents a group of illustrators who challenge the traditional roles of illustration as an ancillary and derivative art form. The artists argue that as a craft and practice, illustration is evolving. Throughout the exhibition they present the notion of the illustrator as author or originator of ideas. In this context, illustration does not slavishly follow the written word but rather creates a complimentary an...d unique visual contribution to narrative. As a result illustration becomes a visual distillation of ideas that at its most resolved can be considerd complete Art forms suitable for galleries and institutions.

The artists in the exibition form part of the Philippine’s rising generation of illustrators as authors. They are progenitors of their own ideas and push the role of illustration within the Philippine context by creating works that are driven by distinct individual visions. Artists include Abi Goy, A.J. Omandac, Aldy Aguirre, Allan Balisi, Apol Sta. Maria, Bru, Dan Matutina, Dex.Fernandez, Dina Gadia, Epjey Pacheco, Froilan Calayag, Kat Medina, Katwo Puertollano, Lala Gallardo, Manix Abrera, Marcushiro Nada, Mariano Ching, Mica Cabildo, Pepper Roxas, Pergyline Acuna, Rommel Joson, Tof Zapanta, WeeWillDoodle, Zeus Bascon. Also participating are Eeshaun, a Singaporean visual artist, and Mel Stringer, an Australian illustrator.

Many of these illustrators have played numerous roles in the creative industry. Some are designers and gallery exhibitors, whilst others have made comics and children’s books or their own merchandise. Time and again their work crosses a variety of media and objects, some commissioned and others intensely personal. We Are Not Aimless highlights these diverse talents and strengths in order to inform new audiences about this often misunderstood art form.

Seemingly unappreciated are those structures who are trimmed down into rubbles by a process of demolition - involving a non-emotional participation of people, who are given authority to put an end to the existence of a functional construction. These structures will be replaced, and then eventually be forgotten.

The objective of this project is to commemorate these structures for the meaning and purpose they have served for the people and the community: to give imporatnce and celebrate their existence; to make an attempt in immortalizing the memory of them (for the people who are personally attached to them, at least); and to acknowledge the wholeness of their being.

this is the reason and first of the project. i was simply assigned to paint all aged rocks white when my uncle told me it will soon be demolished because the government bought the land to make it a passage for all the visitors every nov.1.

i thought it was here even before i exist and everything will be lost just because someone bought the land, thus this project...

a week ago, i decided to clean-up all the mess i left out from all the work i did recently for 2 months. i worked mostly downstairs (at the dining area, the bar, and the garage).

the exhibit opening at Pablo Fort was fun! it's the first exhibit opening my parents attended, and i was nervous a bit (they might figure out some of my negativities regarding home). anyway, good thing all they read were the invites and the brochure.

the works are great, all the artist were there except for bru (enjoy your vacation bru!) and a number of friends came (thank yous!!!), and met new ones (hello, nice meeting you guys)!

Dealing with his own struggle in their seemingly inviting household is the subject of Zeus Bascon’s works for this exhibit. His personal issues regarding his periodic disengagement with the members of the family and to the concept of home, lead him to a state which is somewhat displaced; hence the urge to create a framework that, in some way, near to the universal idea of what constitutes domesticity.

This October 2010, Shangri-la Plaza will be unveiling the newest fashion hub in the metro, The Youth Zone. It will be launched through the “5th Power: The Art of Fashion” exhibit and fashion show. Shangri-La Plaza aims to show that fashion inspires art and art inspires fashion, and that this never ending cycle continues to inspire fashionistas and stir the imagination of the artists. The exhibit will showcase the collections of the participating merchants, alongside an artwork inspired by the theme of each collection.

I was assigned to do Nafnaf. And never derived ideas from clothes before so this was definitely a challenging project for me. But i had fun doing this and thanks to Mimi Tecson for the exhibit!

last august, i was part of a lyrical exhibit organized by Kooky Tuason. She's a poet, she performs poetry reading, a radio jock, event organizer, and she's really good!hehe in this exhibit, she did 10 romantic poems and each participating artists were asked to pick two from the collection. other participating artists were Dex Fernandez, Marcus Nada, Richard Tuason and Rovi Jesher Salegumba.

anyway, my mother regularly use incense all over the house to drive away bad spirits. i also believe we have some 'friends' in the house, but i don't think they will go away after the incense. i always imagine, during the 'smoking', they will just be annoyed and go out for fresh air. then after a few hours, they'll come back.haha

here's the creepy part, we were eating merienda then nanay, ate and i had goosebumps (as in from the legs up to the neck)! really. it was weird and creepy. i imagined our 'friends' were passing by, going out the house.haha but really it was creepy.

anyway, i wasn't feeling well that day and i believe it has nothing to do with our 'friends'. i woke up early around 530am (which is unusal) and finished some small paintings just before evening...
